Kariba

Lake Kariba is the largest manmade lake in Africa. The name Kariba means “where the waters have been trapped.” Located in the northern part of Zimbabwe, 380 km from Harare, the lake is shared between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The lake was filled between 1958 and 1963 after the completion of the dam wall. It stretches 230 kilometres long and up to 40 km wide in some areas.

Known for its spectacular views, breathtaking sunsets, boat cruises, and water sports, Kariba is an ideal resort for a relaxing holiday or fishing trip. It houses numerous fish species, such as tilapia, Kariba bream, and tiger fish.

Kariba offers multiple accommodation options, from water-facing hotels, chalets, and campsites to in-demand luxurious houseboats that offer 3-day water safari cruises upstream chasing timeless sunsets. Locals are known to share stories of the mythical Nyaminyami legend, the water serpent whose carvings are seen everywhere in Kariba. Kariba International Airport is located 4 km east of Kariba town and 13 km east of the Kariba Dam.

The airport has a single terminal that facilitates both domestic and international passengers. Tour operators provide visitors with shuttle services to hotels, chalets, campsites, and the harbour.

Fastjet Zimbabwe operates scheduled flights from Kariba to Harare and Victoria Falls.
